AQUALYX
WHAT IS IT?
Aqualyx is the brand name for a fat dissolving product that can be used to help eliminate stubborn areas of fat. This includes areas such as double chins, love handles, bingo wings and any area of the body where fat is difficult to eliminate from diet and exercise alone.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Aqualyx solution contains a synthetic version of the compound deoxycholic acid, which our guts normally produce to break down and digest fat when we eat it.
Aqualyx works in a similar way to break down fat cells and permanently destroys the fatty structures. Our lymphatic (drainage) system works to remove the broken down waste product and excretes it over a period of weeks.
WHAT DOES TREATMENT INVOLVE?
Treatment involves multiple injections of the aqualyx solution directly into the areas of fat. This is done with a fine needle and the number of injections and amount of solution used is dependent on the size of area being treated.
Each treatment will work on one layer of fat cells so multiple sessions are recommended for best results with a minimum of 4 weeks between treatments.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Prices vary according to the size of the area being treated and the number of treatments required but single sessions for a small area (e.g. double chin) can start from £90.
On average, for best results, a base package of 3 treatments is recommended and additional sessions can be done if deemed necessary.
WHO CAN DO AQUALYX?
Any injectable aesthetic treatment should be carried out by a trained aesthetics practitioner - currently in the UK this does not require someone to be from a medical background, such as a nurse or doctor.
BE SURE TO CHECK the training qualifications and background of your practitioner beforehand as they may not be equipped to handle complications or emergencies should they arise.
Aqualyx treatment should only proceed following a face-to-face consultation by the practitioner performing the treatment, including a fully informed consent process.
DAY OF TREATMENT
You should always receive a thorough consultation from the practitioner performing your treatment prior to any fat dissolving being agreed to and consented for. Consent should include being made aware of the side effects, risks and potential complications of undergoing treatment.
Topical numbing cream is not usually required as the needles are very fine, but this can be provided on request for those who are more needle-phobic or anxious.
Lidocaine (an anaesthetic agent) is mixed with the aqualyx solution to help numb the area being injected and effects can last up to an hour.
AFTER TREATMENT
Swelling is to be expected! You need to allow at least 2-4 weeks for swelling to resolve in treated area(s). If you are treating noticeable areas such as a double chin you should plan your treatments around any important social events with plenty of time for this to resolve.
Bruising can also occur due to trauma from multiple injection sites but you may use arnica tablets or cream to aid healing.
Lumps and bumps can occur in the initial 2-4 week healing process and should resolve by itself.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER! This helps your lymphatic system drain the waste product away and facilitates better results.
